A German silver enamelled cigarette case, crescent moon and crown mark, 835 standard, the painted enamel depicting the Vision of St Hubert, a White Hart stag with a crucifix between its antlers, opening to reveal a gilt interior Dimensions: 7 x 9cm, weight 4.1ozt Condition: Light scratches to the enamel but no chips. The silver is tarnished but not dented. St Hubert of Liège, known as the Apostle of the Ardennes, is the patron saint of hunters, opticians and metalworkers. The Vision of St Hubert is a medieval legend in which Hubert, a 7th century nobleman, converts to Christianity whilst encountering a White Hart on Good Friday. The stag has crucifix between its antlers and urges Hubert to lead a holy life.
