An impressive Victorian Folk Art butcher's shop display model by Fernley, 1880 polychrome decorated wood and plaster, depicting the shop front decked with cuts, carcasses and produce with a butcher holding a steel knife, to the left the abattoir at work with figures engaged in butchery including the slaughtering of a bull, above the sign inscribed 'Fernley Family Butchers', and a row of four sash windows, adorned with flags, ferns and potted plants, bears a metal plaque label to left "Fernley Makers Limehouse 1880", the case with applied gilt frame to front and carrying handles to side It is understood that these models were placed in butcher's shop windows when the shop was closed as a trade sign. height 78 cm., width 94.5 cm., depth 42 cm. Condition:Overall in very good condition commensurate with age. there are some minor very small areas of paint work which have flaked, limited to a couple of very small areas. One meat joint is lose on the display and needs re-gluing. Several of the chromolithograph printed paper floral decorations are detached but present. Fern decorations are slightly distressed with some shedding. Outer case paper is distressed with some losses and flaking. A "Caterpillar Club" lapel pin detailed and textured body with pink gem-set eyes, engraved to reverse "Sgt. G Mansel Pres By Irvine Co." Condition: “The Caterpillar Club”
The Caterpillar Club was an informal association of people who had successfully used a parachute to bail out of a disabled aircraft. The club was founded by Leslie Irvin, of the Irvin Airchute Company of Canada in 1922, who agreed to give a pin to every person whose life was saved by one of his parachutes. The choice of the caterpillar, specifically the silkworm, refers to the silk threads that were originally used in parachutes; thus, honouring the small creature.
